Conscious choice, in the form of deliberately skipping something you know you could do, feels qualitatively different from the paralysis of freeze. If you have ever watched yourself decline an outing, scroll past a responsibility, or decide that the dishes can wait another day — and if you have done so with a quiet internal smirk, with the small pleasure of asserting your own preferences — that is one thing. That has a texture. That has a kind of internal freedom to it, however modest.
Freeze does not feel like that. Freeze feels like being trapped inside a suit of heavy clothing you did not put on. Freeze feels like watching your own to-do list from behind a pane of glass. Freeze feels like the body has quietly left the room while you remain seated in the chair, unable to follow. The difference is not subtle, and once you have begun to learn it, you cannot unlearn it.
